<p>The invention includes several devices (100, 250, 300, 400, 500, 602, 800, 900, 940, 1000, 1040, 1110, 1120) for readily transferring patients from one platform to another by one attendant. A first system (100) of horizontal transfer of patients (126) is adapted to use existing transfer sheets (190) and cart (102) appropriately modified. A transfer sheet (190) is attached to a clamping device (194) that has a releasable catch (200) that holds the sheet (190) in a cavity (198). A plurality of straps (172) are attached to the clamping device (194). The other ends of the straps (172) are attached to reels (175) that are part of a winch (138). Activation of the winch (138) winds the straps (172) onto the reels (175). The invention also includes improved bed jackets (702) that can be attached to a winch (712, 726) for lifting a patient either to re-position them on a surface or to transport them.
