PURPOSE: An active unit for a surge arrester is provided to reduce a physical height of the active unit and consumption of material. CONSTITUTION: An active unit comprises connection fittings(10,20) spaced apart from each other along an axis(z); one or more cylindrical varistor columns(30) provided between the connection fittings; and one or more dielectric loops(41,42). The dielectric loops are supported at a connection piece interposed between two connection fittings. The dielectric loops generate contact forces by retaining a part of the varistor column between the connecting fittings and the connection piece, or the varistor columns. At least one of the connection fittings includes plate type electrodes disposed perpendicularly to the axis(z); electrical connection portions(12,22) formed integrally with the plates; and a member for supporting ends of the dielectric loops. The member is formed at the plates and/or at edges of the plates.
