PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink-jet printer which efficiently carries out a maintenance operation for a recording head when a high-viscosity and ultraviolet curing ink is used as an ink for image recording. SOLUTION: The ink-jet printer includes the recording head 4 which has a nozzle face 41 with nozzles 42 formed at one face, and discharges the high-viscosity ink onto a recording medium P; and an ultraviolet ray irradiation device 10 for curing the ink by irradiating ultraviolet rays after the ink impacts on the recording medium P. The ink-jet printer is equipped with an optical sensor 8 for detecting whether or not the ink is appropriately discharged from the recording head 4, and a controlling device 100 for controlling so that the maintenance operation for the recording head 4 is carried out only when the optical sensor 8 detects an ink discharge failure.
