PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner capable of avoiding wastage of electric power, when an error occurs in the image scanner. SOLUTION: The image scanner is connected to a host computer with a preset interface, and using the interface, reads image information on an original and transfers the information to the host computer as image data. The image scanner comprises a detection means 511 for detecting troubles in an image scanner body; a sender information recognizing function for recognizing the information of a sender of an instruction to start an operation to read the original; a destination information recognizing function for recognizing the information, with respect to a receiver of the obtained image data; a control unit 37 with an interface recognition function for recognizing the type of the interface connected to the designated destination; and a power source control means 420 for controlling a power source supplying the electric power to the image reader body in matching with a combination of the information obtained by the functions of the control unit, when a trouble in the image scanner body is detected by the detection means.
