PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which facilitates alignment control of liquid crystal molecules without using a rubbing method. SOLUTION: The above problem of the liquid crystal display device of a horizontal alignment system having a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer injected between these substrates is solved by forming alignment layers 5 alternately lined up with hydrophilic regions A and hydrophobic regions A on the first substrate and the second substrate. At this time, the boundary lines of the hydrophilic regions A and hydrophobic regions B adjacent to each other are preferably parallel or approximately parallel. The manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display device comprizes a process of forming the hydrophobic alignment layers which can be subjected to hydrophilicizing treatment on the surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate and a process of forming the hydrophilic regions by subjecting part of the alignment layers to the hydrophilicizing treatment.
