PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning system and method for using a multi-beam brush having a timing generator. SOLUTION: A wide separation of scan beams permits the modulator to turn beams on or off with a direction of brightening or darkening in the cross-section of the beams being opposite to the scanning direction. A beam device in a brush permits a uniform indexing step size for uniformly exposing an image region. The timing generator has: a source for a pixel period value; a selection circuit for selecting the pixel period value for a pixel; and a counter for loading a first value from the pixel period value selected for the pixel, counting a period indicated by the first value and asserting a signal which marks the termination of the period.
