Measurement of the properties of particles in suspension moving through a fluidic microsystem comprises measuring two different parameters corresponding to two different properties at different measuring stations. These are then compared with predetermined values to decide if further measurements or manipulation should be carried out. Independent claims are included for: (a) apparatus for measuring the properties of particles (20, 21) suspended in a liquid and moving through a fluidic microsystem (30) which has measuring stations (11, 12) for the different parameters and a processing unit (40) containing a comparator (41) for comparing the values with predetermined values and producing signals for manipulation of the particles; and (b) a fluidic microsystem incorporating the apparatus.
