<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming a desirable image of both a character image and halftone image even if there is a change in an edge effect due to a change in the film thickness of, for example, a photoreceptor and the like. <P>SOLUTION: Line drawing patterns 201, 202 and 203 constituting the first patterns formed on a photoreceptor drum 21 and drawing patterns 204, 205 and 206 constituting second patterns are exposed and formed by respectively different laser outputs. The relations between the laser outputs, line widths and densities can be determined by detecting the line widths of the first patterns and the densities of the second pattern by means of an optical sensor SE 1 and therefore the laser outputs for the character image are set from the results of the detection of the first patterns, and the laser outputs for halftones from the second patterns.
