<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for gasifying an organic substance by a high-temperature high-pressure water, in which the amount of a gas produced can be increased in gasifying an organic substance by a high-temperature high-pressure water at a reaction temperature lower than those in previous methods and in which the generation of viscous residues can be controlled. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for gasifying an organic substance by a high-temperature high-pressure water using a metal catalyst, a small amount of a carbon catalyst is used in combination with the metal catalyst.
