PURPOSE: An apparatus for a message service in a home network, and a method therefor are provided to realize conversation between users by using a home network with transmitting predetermined messages. CONSTITUTION: The first and second devices generate packets according to a home network protocol, and exchange the generated packets with each other, monitoring operations. The home network protocol is formed of a physical layer(400), a data link layer(410), a home network layer(420), an application layer(430), and a message layer(440). The physical layer(400) is a hardware element for exchanging packets. The data link layer(410) controls an error of a physical level, provides synchronization, and confirms and manages transmission of data. The home network layer(420) controls a path to transmit packets to an accurate device. The application layer(430) considers the service quality, user authentication, and secrets, and decides constraint of data syntax. The message layer(440) is formed in parallel with the home network layer(420), generates predetermined message packets according to a message inputted through a user interface, and extracts a message from the received message packet to display the message on a picture.
