PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and stably removing nitrogen from waste water containing COD (chemical oxygen demand) and ammonia nitrogen. SOLUTION: This method for removing ammonia nitrogen compounds from the waste water is a method wherein nitrogen is removed from the waste water containing the COD and the ammonia nitrogen by a biological denitrification process comprising a denitrification tank and an aerobic tank. In the aerobic tank, the pH of the waste water is controlled to 7.0-7.5, the ammonia nitrogen compounds in the waste water are oxidized by using nitrifying bacteria to generate nitrite nitrogen. In the denitrification tank, the pH of the waste water is controlled to 8.0-9.0, and the nitrite nitrogen is reduced to nitrogen gas by using the nitrifying bacteria and the COD components in the waste water as a COD source. The waste water is circulated between the two tanks, thereby improving an efficiency of the oxidation reaction and efficiency of the reduction reaction and removing the ammonia nitrogen compounds by reducing them to the nitrogen gas.
