PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable information reproducing apparatus by properly rectifying a gain of an equalization signal in order to rectify slippage of a reference level of a maximum likelihood decode and a peak level of the equalization signal. SOLUTION: The information reproducing apparatus has: an equalization filter 17 which performs partial response equalization to a detection signal detected by a detector and outputs a equalization signal; a variable gain amplifier 16 which rectifies potential of an equalization signal by amount of compensations G (T) determined based on a plurality of reference levels LV0-LV6 to be used for maximum likelihood decode, and a plurality of peak levels LP0-LP6 of a histogram of equalization signals (T) corresponding to them; and a maximum likelihood decoder which performs maximum likelihood decoding by referring to a reference level based on a rectified equalization signal.
