PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus capable of surely detecting the four position where image forming processes are executed with one sensor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has first transfer rollers which are arranged in correspondence to respective photoreceptors and transfer the respective color toner images on the photoreceptor drums 2a to 5a to an intermediate transfer belt 7, a second transfer roller which transfers the toner images transferred onto the belt 7 to paper P, a changeover means which performs changeover to four positions for executing the image forming process by rotation with 90°intervals, flags F which are attached coaxially with a revolving shaft 21 constituting the changeover means and are arranged respectively by one piece each at a start point position and at positions of 90°, 180°and 270°to the rotating direction from the start point position and at the numbers respectively different from each other at least at three points among the four points therebetween, and a sensor 23 which detects the flags F rotated by the changeover means.
