PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device capable of accurately detecting a crowded condition of passengers in a moving sidewalk in which belts having different speeds are connected in series. SOLUTION: In this moving sidewalk in which getting-on-and-off belts moving at speed V<SB>1</SB>are installed in series for arbitrary belts moving at speed V<SB>n</SB>, at least two detection devices detecting an interval of passengers on the arbitrary belt are provided, and an interval of arrangement of the detection devices is set to a value proportional to V<SB>n</SB>/V<SB>1</SB>. This detection device is a photoelectric device composed of a projector and a light receiver and is provided with a signal processing device checking respective operation conditions of the first detection device and the second detection device by relating them mutually.
