PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect paper jam arising in a carrying passage for a recorded material without fail. SOLUTION: A printer has a Fd discharge passage for discharging a recorded material subjected to recording and curved and reversed with its recorded face being turned inside and a Fu discharge passage for discharging it obliquely straightupward with its recorded face kept turned upside. A sheet detector 70 having contact with the recorded material for detecting the passage of the recorded material is provided on the upstream side of a carriage driving roller 28. A Fd sheet detector 509 is provided near the downstream side of a Fd discharge driving roller 41, namely, nearest the downstream side of the sheet carrying passage in the printer 1. A control part of the printer 1 detects paper jam of the recorded material when the Fd sheet detector 509 does not detect the passage of the recorded material during the preset-turn rotation of the carriage driving roller 28 after the recorded material passes through the sheet detector 70.
