PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for detecting a gap on a mold for molding a tire capable of preventing a defective tire from being produced, and a method for judging the gap using this apparatus for detecting the gap. SOLUTION: Displacement sensors 9 constituting the apparatus for detecting the gap are respectively buried on at least one position of a mating faces 2a of sector molds 2, to always detect an amount h of the gap between the sector molds 2 when the sector molds 2 are closed during vulcanization of a tire. The displacement sensors 9 buried on each of the sector molds 2 are connected to a circuit switch 11a fitted on a segment 7 through conducting wires 10 wired in the sector molds 2, and are connected to a circuit switch 11b provided on the upper side plate 4 when the upper side plate 4 is lowered and the sector molds 2 are closed. The circuit switch 11b is connected to a gap detecting means 12, and comprises an arithmetic unit 13 for comparing and operating a detected signal from the displacement sensor 9 with a gap permissible value set in advance, and a comparison judging means 14 for displaying a result on operation.
