Method for changing up in the drive train of a motor vehicle with an automatic parallel changing gearbox with two parallel drive branches each with a coupling. A selected drive branch is selected by engaging the appropriate coupling so that in the inactive drive branch a new gear can be selected and then engaged using the coupling. Thus changing-up can be achieved dependent on predefined operating conditions without an electronically implement engine access. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for controlling gear changes in a motor vehicle gearbox dependent on engine loading, said device having a microprocessor and memories for controlling actuators that implement the gear changes according to the inventive method.
