<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet identification device for easily identifying a specified logotype of paper sheets for which the specified logotype is printed on a prescribed background. <P>SOLUTION: As for the paper sheet identification device 1, the paper sheets P for which the specified logotype is printed on the background are objects. When identifying the logotype, the obstructing background is made to disappear as much as possible in order to distinguish the logotype. In order to achieve the above, an illumination part 20 which emits the light of a color roughly matched with the specified printing color of the background is used. Thus, the image of the specified logotype illuminated by the emitted light is picked up by an image pickup means 10 through an image forming lens part 14. Whether or not there is an unnatural part in the specified logotype distinguished on the background , if any, is easily identified.
