PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized light-weight visual display device using a compact relay optical system. SOLUTION: The visual display device is provided with a display element 1 for displaying an image, the relay optical system 2 for re-imaging the image displayed on the display element 1 and an eyepiece optical system 3 for enlarging and projecting the image re-imaged on the re-imaging surface 4 as a virtual image to an eye-ball, and as for the relay optical system 2, a distance between an object and an image is≥50mm and≤100mm, the size of the image re-imaged on the re-imaging surface 4 is≥10mm and≤40mm in diagonal length, a numerical aperture on the relay optical system 2 side of the re-imaging face 4 is≥0.02 and≤0.08, and the relay optical system 2 is constituted so as to include at least one positive lens on the object face side and an image face side, respectively, across a brightness diaphragm, and so as to include lens groups including concave surfaces placed opposite to each other on both sides of the brightness diaphragm.
