PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fiber of higher mechanical strength in a shorter time while preventing filament-filament fusing of a precursor fiber filament yarn after subjected to pretreatment, in its turn, of the corresponding flameproofed fiber filament yarn. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carbon fiber includes the following process: The precursor fiber filament yarns are subjected to pretreatment using an external roll-mount type oven with oxidative gas atmosphere so as to be≥4% in moisture content while keeping the temperature of the roll at≤150°C and then introduced into an internal roll-mount type oven with oxidative gas atmosphere and subjected to flameproofing treatment, and the resultant flameproofed fiber filament yarns are introduced into an oven with inert gas atmosphere and subjected to carbonization treatment.
