PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method and device for a combustion engine capable of relatively simply determining an actual value of an output parameter, especially torque, of a drive unit of the combustion engine. SOLUTION: In this operation method for the combustion engine 1, an actual value of an output variable, especially torque, of the drive unit 5 of the combustion engine 1 is defined. The actual value is determined depending on actual engine speed of the combustion engine 1, actual pressure in an intake pipe 25 of the combustion engine 1, and an actual ignition frequency component of the engine speed. The operation device 35 for the combustion engine 1 is provided with a means 40 to define the actual value of the output variable, especially torque, of the drive unit 5 of the combustion engine 1. The means 40 to define the actual value determines the actual value depending on the actual engine speed of the combustion engine 1, the actual pressure in the intake pipe 25 in the combustion engine 1, and the actual ignition frequency component of the engine speed.
