PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a deodorizer which can deodorize without changing the properties of an odor generation source such as sludge and without exerting influence on water quality, and to provide a deodorizing method. SOLUTION: The deodorizer comprises an ethyl acetate extract obtained by extracting sludge in which the molar concentration of menaquinone 9H8 is≥8 mol% or the culture of streptomyces with ethyl acetate as an available component. By adding the ethyl acetate extract to the odor generation source, the secondary synthetic metabolism of microorganisms such as streptomyces present there is activated, and sulfur atoms are immobilized as antibiotics and melanin, so that the production of sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan is competitively inhibited to suppress the generation of odors.
