<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a face extracting method for completely automatically and precisely extracting the face of a person without asking any help from a color original image such as a negative film or positive film, and to provide a method for acquiring the high extraction rate of the face without being affected much even in the case that the positions of the sites(eyes or mouth) of the face deviate due to the inaccuracy of the extraction of a face candidate area. <P>SOLUTION: In this method for extracting the face of a person from an image, a face candidate area equivalent to the shape of the face of a person is decided, and a face area is decided from featured values in the face candidate area.
