PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly deposit a rare earth element in high concentration in porous glass soot and to suppress clustering of the added erbium in a method of manufacturing a rare earth element-added optical fiber preform which is performed by dipping the porous glass soot to be a core in a rare earth element compound aqueous solution to deposit the rare earth lement in the glass soot. SOLUTION: The porous glass soot to be the core is dipped in an acid-added acidic solution of the rare earth element compound. As the rare earth element, erbium and one or more kinds of the rare earth elements except erbium such as ytterbium, lanthanum, cerium and neodymium are used. As the aqueous solution of the rare earth element, a hydrochloric acid aqueous solution of a chloride of the rare earth element is preferably used and the concentration of the acid to be added is preferably≥0.5 mol%.
