PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage medium reproducing device capable of transferring to a special mode with a simple operation. SOLUTION: The storage medium reproducing device 1 is provided with medium sensors 16a to 16d for detecting the insertion of a storage medium CD into an insertion port 12 formed in a casing 11, conveying mechanisms 14, 15 for conveying the storage medium inserted into the insertion port to a reading position, and a control means 17 for operating the conveying mechanisms to convey the storage medium to the reading position when the medium sensors detect the insertion of the storage medium into the insertion port. The control means 17 operates the storage medium reproducing device on a special mode different from a normal starting mode when the storage medium is not detected by the medium sensors before the storage medium reaches the reading position after the medium sensors detect the insertion of the storage medium.
