A surface wave touch screen (40) comprising a hydrophobic touch panel (46) capable of propagating surface acoustic waves, wherein a touch on the touch panel (46) causes a perturbation of a surface wave propagating through the region of the touch. Surface wave transducer means (42, 44, 52, 54) are coupled to the touch panel (46) for transmitting and receiving surface acoustic waves on the panel (46) and processing means (32) are capable of determining the position of a touch on the panel (46).
