The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for rotation of an image, and more particularly transferring a digitally stored image from one orientation to another. By copying pixel values from a source image orientation to a destination image orientation, only a single buffer if needed for the process. The invention includes the steps of: moving all pixel values one by one in a linked order, by: a) taking a first pixel value from the source image and mapping it to a corresponding pixel position in the destination image, b) temporarily storing the existing pixel value of the source image at this position and storing said first pixel value from the source image in its place, c) mapping said existing pixel value of the source image to its corresponding pixel position in the destination image, d) similarly repeating steps b) and c) with succeeding pixels, wherein the linked order is arranged so that all pixels will be run through. <IMAGE>
