Device (1) for securing people and loads in the event of a crash comprises a drum (2) rotatably mounted e.g. in a housing (4) against the force of one or more restoring springs and receiving a tension element (3) having a free end connected to the person or load, and a ratchet mechanism (7) for locking the drum to the housing. The drum has a device (21) for guiding the tension element. The part (3') of the tension element leaving the drum is adjusted perpendicular to the longitudinal axis by this device depending on the speed of the drum. The adjustment movement of the tension element in the two end regions of the drum is automatically controlled.
