[Also in Divisions B5, B6 and E1] A surfacing material for applying to a substrate comprises a first layer of a synthetic plastics material and a second layer of a thermoplastic polyurethane whereby the surfacing material can be adhered to a substrate, the first layer having applied thereto a granular material to provide a rough wear-resistant surface. The surfacing material can be adhered to a substrate, such as asphalt, bitumen, concrete, wood or metal, e.g. steel, optionally using suitable adhesives such as an epoxide resin. The material may be in strip form. Suitable thermoplastic polyurethanes are disclosed. The granular materials may be sand, quartz, corundum, silicon carbide. The first layer may also comprise glass beads as reflectors, dyestuffs and pigments such as titanium dioxide. The synthetic resin may be a cold setting or thermosetting epoxide resin optionally containing a flexibility imparting agent, or polyvinyl chloride or a polyurethane to which conventional plasticisers have been added. A foil of thermoplastic polyurethane may be coated by pouring on or trowelling a composition consisting of a curable epoxide resin, a flexibility agent, a hardener, a filler. Granular material is then scattered on to a layer of the epoxide resin hardener mixture and rolled in. The epoxide resins preferred are those which are liquid at ambient temperatures, and suitable compounds are listed. Examples of flexibility imparting agents and hardeners for the epoxide resin binders including hardening agents having a curing action on the binder are also given. Accelerators for the hardening of the binder may be used and examples are given. A solution of the thermoplastic polyurethane may be applied to a foil of polyvinyl chloride containing a filler incorporated during the formation of the foil by extrusion or calendering and material of desired grain fraction may be incorporated by rolling into the surface of the foil. That surface not so provided with granular material may be treated with the polyurethane solution. Alternatively, the foil may be coated by immersion in the solution; the surfaces sanded and coated again with the polyurethane solution. A foil of thermoplastic polyurethane may be coated on one side with a pigmented polyurethane solution and granular material scattered thereon, the process then being repeated. The amount and grain size of the granular material can be varied, and a mixture of grain sizes of up to 1 mm is preferred. The first layer may have zones of different degrees of surface-roughness by using different granular materials or materials of different granulation, and may have different areas comprising a different pigment or dyestuff. The surfacing material can be used for producing "zebra crossings" surfacings for boat decks, landing stages, jetties, roadways and road markings.
