An electric discharge lamp includes a discharge-heated thermionic cathode formed of one or more elongate bodies, each of which has a diameter A, in millimetres, which is less than 1.2 times the value in amps. of the rated current capacity J of the lamp, the cathode providing spaced electron-emissive parts of which the mean separation of adjacent parts, in millimetres, is greater than 1À1 times the cube root of J, whereby concentration of the cathode spot, and consequent noise generation, is minimized. The cathode, which may be incorporated in a fluorescent lamp having a mercury and rare gas filling, may be in the form either of a helix, having such internal diameter and pitch that the spacing condition is satisfied; a conical or flat spiral (Figs. 4(a), 4(b) and 5, not shown); or an array of separate parallel bars 3 connected between a pair of lead wires 4.
