A method of installing spiral threaded inserts 38, wherein a first threaded insert is inserted into an installation tool 20, and is screwed into a tapped hole (18, fig 3), by means of the installation tool. The first threaded insert is secured in the installation tool to prevent it from falling out. Preferably the threaded inserts are provided with a driving tang 40, which is secured to the installation tool, to prevent it from falling out, and where the driving tang is cut off from the first threaded insert after installation. A securing thread 28 may be fastened to the driving tang for securing the first threaded insert in the installation tool, and the cut-off driving tang may be removed from the first threaded insert by means of the securing thread. The method may be used in the inspection of industrial gas turbines. An optical probe such as a borescope may be attached to the installation tool to aid in the installation of the spiral threaded insert. |
