PURPOSE: A circuit for driving a flat panel display capable of supporting both color and mono modes and a method for driving the same are provided to increase the efficiency of the chip. CONSTITUTION: A circuit for driving a flat panel display capable of supporting both color and mono modes includes a shift register(11), a data latch circuit, a pulse width modulation generation block, a level shifter block and a channel output driver. The shift register(11) is provided with a 2x1 multiplexor(12). The data latch circuit stores the Nx3 number of data values during the mono mode by using the latch clock generated at the shift register and stores the N number of data values during the color mode. The pulse width modulation generation block adjusts the pulse in response to the data of the data latch circuit block. The level shifter block shifts the register signal passing through the pulse width modulation generation block by a previously set level. And, the channel output driver outputs the switching signal to the high or the low in response to the signal shifted at the level shifter.
