Device for sealing gap between a shaft (2) and a machine housing (3) has a compensator (14) connected to a sealing and bearing housing (10) by an inner annular fastener (23) and to the machine housing by an outer annular fastener (25). An elastic bridging component (24) is situated between the fasteners. The bearing housing, inner fastener and outer fastener all have seating recesses (26, 27, 28). The bridging component has two elastomeric sealing rings (24a, 24b) which fit into these seating recesses. The device for sealing the gap between a shaft (2) and a machine housing (3) comprises a sealing and bearing housing (10) which surrounds the shaft and contains a anti-friction bearing device (11) and a row of sealing lips (13) which follows alterations in the shaft due to bending or thermal expansion. A compensator (14) for these variations is connected to the sealing and bearing housing by an inner annular fastener (23) and to the machine housing by an outer annular fastener (25).
