Direct expanded liquid crystal composition comprises an aqueous phase containing an ionic compound, a water-immiscible organic solvent phase, a nonionic or cationic surfactant phase and a cosurfactant phase. The composition is colorless or opalescent, and has a hexagonal, cubic or sponge structure. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of the liquid crystal composition by vigorously mixing the surfactant, the aqueous phase and the organic solvent and adding the cosurfactant while vigorously stirring the mixture; (2) synthesizing a chemical compound in a reaction medium consisting of the liquid crystal composition; (3) synthesizing metal (nano)particles or metal oxide particles in a reaction medium consisting of the liquid crystal composition; (4) production of polymers in a reaction medium consisting of the liquid crystal composition.
