The present invention concerns a method (200) and a system (100) for automatically refreshing previously recorded data on a recordable storage medium (110) during playback of the previously recorded data from the recordable storage medium. The method includes the steps of: reading (212) a segment of the previously recorded data from the recordable storage medium; and rewriting(218) at least a portion of the segment of the previously recorded data back onto the recordable storage medium. In addition, the method can include the step of selectively examining (214) thesegment of the previously recorded data by searching for errors in the previously recorded data in which the rewriting step can be performed only if the level of errors in the previously recorded data reaches a predetermined level.
