PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner with a ratchet mechanism having a resetting and locking function. SOLUTION: In this hydraulic tensioner 10, a piston 15 has a plurality of ratchet teeth 22 formed along the longitudinal direction of a piston skirt 11 constituting a piston outer side part, and at least one flat part 18 formed around a piston outer periphery in a state of being separated from the ratchet teeth 22 in the circumferential direction, and having a depth same as a depth of the ratchet teeth 22. The ball 12 has a spring 13 and a plurality of ratchet teeth 17, and the spring 13 presses the ratchet teeth 17 of the ball 12 to a ratchet teeth 22 side of the piston 15. The axial movement of the piston 15 is restricted when the ratchet teeth 22 are rotated from a first position to be engaged with the ball 12, and the ball 12 is rotated from a second position seated on the flat part 18.
