PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber having variable damping characteristics, in particular, easy to control and stable. SOLUTION: The shock absorber comprises elongation and pressure side damping characteristic varying mechanisms and elongation and pressure side damping force generating elements 30, 31 provided in series on the way of a flow path communicating a first liquid chamber R1 and a second liquid chamber R2 formed in a piston 28 with each other. The damping characteristic varying mechanisms each consist of a solenoid S, a valve seat 26b, and a hollow spool 19 having a communication hole 25 communicating the inside thereof with the outside. The spool 19 is mounted between an armature 14 to be energized to the direction of normally closing an one-end opening portion of the spool 19 and attracted in the direction of opening it during exciting the solenoid S and the valve seat 26b for closing an other-end opening portion of the spool 19. With the current control of the solenoid S, cracking pressure Pcr is changed for opening a space between the valve seat 26b and the other-end opening portion of the spool 19 to vary damping characteristics.
