PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper handling device capable of reducing user's burden by properly distinguishing paper money to be returned and improving distinguishing speed as much as possible. SOLUTION: This paper handling device 1 is provided with a conveyance means for conveying paper Y along a conveyance passage 12, a distinguishing sensor S3 for distinguishing the paper Y conveyed by the conveyance means, a branch passage 16 for letting the paper Y evacuate from a distinguishing possible position, and a control part controlling the conveyance means to convey the paper Y which is distinguished that it must be returned by the distinguishing sensor S3 into the branch passage 16 and convey the paper Y conveyed into the branch passage 16 to the distinguishing possible position of the distinguishing sensor S3.
