A device for holding a spherical lens (SL) (108) has a first lens-bearing surface (FLBS). A removable device applies a retaining force that presses the lens against the FLBS aligned to a ferrule channel. Designed as a partial sphere to retain the SL, the FLBS is molded on an insert as an integral part. An independent claim is also included for a fiber optic waveguide plug-in device that has a lens coupling with an insert according to the present invention.
