PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device constituted so that the light emission of organic EL elements can be efficiently utilized, and a liquid crystal display device in which the lighting device is made as the light source. SOLUTION: In the lighting device having a light guide plate having light guiding characteristics equipped with the organic EL elements at the end, on the edge face of the light guide plate, the transparent electrode constituting the organic EL element, the organic layer including the light-emitting layer, and the reflecting electrode are laminated in this order, the emitting light of the organic EL elements is constituted so as to be emitted from the transparent electrode directly to the light guide plate.
