PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording method capable of recording with excellent recording quality by suppressing deterioration in the recording performance. SOLUTION: Data are recorded in a recording area of an information recording medium, and it is subsequently determined whether to apply defect detection processing to at least one portion of the recording area recorded with the data on the basis of prescribed determination reference associated with recording attribute information of the data (step 417). Determination reference by which detect detection processing can be performed without greatly deteriorating the recording performance is set beforehand. Then, it is checked whether the determination reference is satisfied on the basis of the recording attribute information of the data. By determining to perform detect detection processing only when the determination reference is satisfied, deterioration in recording performance is suppressed and recording with excellent recording quality can be performed.
