PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of securing the uniformity of the amount of lubricant coating applied to the surface of an image carrier by using a comparatively simple and inexpensive constitution. SOLUTION: By bringing a rotating lubricant-application brush 10 into contact with a bar-shaped solid lubricant 9 at the contact part of the brush 10 with a photoreceptor belt 1, the lubricant is scraped little by little and applied to the surface of the belt 1 in contact therewith. The rotation time of the brush 10 is variably controlled after finishing an image forming operation in accordance with the ratio of an image area value derived from the number of pixels in a single continuous image forming operation to the number of times of image formation. By compensating the difference of coating efficiency caused by the difference in the amount of input toner to the brush 10, stable image quality is kept. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
