PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel construction method which improves the workability in manual excavation work, to thereby economically construct a tunnel in a short construction period. SOLUTION: According to the tunnel construction method, a plurality of hollow box elements are penetrated in an almost orthogonal direction to a lining cross section with respect to the ground G in a manner arranging the elements along a contour of the tunnel, to thereby constitute a box-type element joint body. In the method, a hollow box element head 2 which has a girder height h higher than a girder height h1 of an elevated floor element 1A is arranged at a front end of the elevated floor element 1A, and the ground G is excavated by the element head 2, to thereby successively penetrate the elevated floor elements 1A. Further excavated earth M is successively filled in a cavity C formed on a rear side of the element head 2 due to a difference h2 between the girder heights, and after construction of the element joint body, the filled excavated earth M is excavated and removed.
