A surgical instrument (1) has an insertion portion (2), a treatment portion (4) provided at one end of the insertion portion so as to project in a projection direction at a predetermined angle to the direction of the axis of the insertion portion, and an operation portion (3) provided at the other end of the insertion portion. The operation portion (3) has a swing operation portion (6) for performing swing operation of the treatment portion and an open/close operation portion (5) for performing open/close operation of the treatment portion. The treatment portion has two clasping members each having a plane portion, is swingable in accordance with the swing operation, and is capable, in accordance with the open/close operation, of moving at least one of the clasping members in a direction substantially perpendicular to a plane of a plane portion.
