PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly efficient magnetic head which can prevent occurrence of side erase. SOLUTION: The magnetic head is provided with a pair of magnetic core half bodies 1 made of magnetic substrates. The bodies 1 are integrally joined by abutting through a spacer, and a magnetic gap 2 is formed between the opposing magnetic substrates to realize a ring shaped magnetic head. At least one track width control groove 4 is provided on the bodies 1 so that the gap 2 is made equal to a prescribed track width 3. The depth 6 of the groove 4 measured from a sliding surface is set within a -5μm to +20μm range relative to the depth 7 of a magnetic gap measured from the sliding surface.
