PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cushion device for a hydraulic cylinder in which stress concentration of a piston rod is reduced, in which the piston rod can be securely held, in which minimum contracted length of the hydraulic cylinder is shorter, and in which productivity and workability are improved. SOLUTION: In this cushion device for a hydraulic cylinder, a piston connected to the piston rod is slidably inserted into a cylinder tube. When the piston rod is actuated in an elongating direction, a cushion plunger slidably supported by the piston rod close to its stroke end is inserted into a head side supply/discharge passage to feed hydraulic fluid to a head chamber to have cushioning effect. In the cushion device, a stopper ring is disposed on the head side to adjoin the cushion plunger to open a stop ring and a taper part of the piston ring for supplying hydraulic fluid from the head side supply/discharge passage to the head chamber, and apply the stop ring and the taper part of the piston rod for disconnecting hydraulic fluid from the head chamber to the head side supply/discharge passage.
