To measure sample transmission, a light beam is directed at it to give an elastic and/or inelastic light scatter. The beam scatter is measured at least at two different points (4,5) at the sample. The measured scattered beam intensities show the sample transmission. The scattered beam light is detected by an opto-electronic receiver, where the light intensity is measured to show the sample refraction and/or surface condition. The lamp (1) delivers light through a lens (2) to the sample (3). A receiver lens (6) and at least two receivers (8,9) are at the measurement points.
