<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus which enable the life of each component thereof in use to be recognized. <P>SOLUTION: At power supply or every time of a prescribed read processing, the loss of the balance of a color for each pixel in a read processing is judged on the basis of the ratio of the color of a pixel unit by an electric signal for each color for which light from a reference plate is converted by a photoelectric conversion means and the ratio of the color of the pixel unit by an initial value for each color stored beforehand. That is, at the power supply or at each of the fixed number of prints, a density and a position deviation are compared with the initial value and adjustment is performed. Thereafter, the density and the position deviation are compared with the initial value and a degree of wear is judged.
