PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection head for magnetic encoder that is compact in the widthwise direction, can be attached easily, and has a high versatility, and to provide a magnetic encoder. SOLUTION: The detection head 12 for magnetic encoder contains a belt-like receiver 104 and a transmitter 14 provided on at least one side of the receiver 104 in the widthwise direction. The receiver 104 is set up so as to face a scale having a prescribed measuring locus in almost parallel with the scale.
