The invention concerns a solid polymer electrolyte with a hydrophobic backbone which is at least partially functionalized by ionic groups. The invention also concerns a process for preparing th epolymer according to the invention and a preferred use thereof. The invention is characterized in that the polymer backbone comprises a copoly(m-phenylene) which contains at least 20 mol.% m-phenylene units and has structure (a), in which R1 to R8 are hydrogen, aryl, oxyaryl, thioaryl, sulphonaryl, carbonylaryl, oxyaryloxyaryl, hydroxyl or ionically dissociable groups.
